"What Goes Around... Comes Around" is the third single from Justin Timberlake's second solo album FutureSex/LoveSounds (2006). "What Goes Around..." has been described by critics as a second version of "Cry Me a River", due to the similarity in theme, structure, and tune of the two songs. Both songs are unforgiving indictments of an unfaithful lover.[citation needed] Despite the familiar topic, Timberlake has stated that, unlike "Cry Me a River", "What Goes Around..." isn't about his former girlfriend Britney Spears. Other sources have claimed that the song is about the break-up of a family friend aside from Ayala, who was deeply hurt and affected. The song features a two-minute interlude called "Comes Around", featuring the album's producer Timbaland. At the beginning of the song, there is about a five-second solo of the Middle Eastern instrument the oud. The beat is then changed to a more upbeat version of the same melody with more percussion. Whereas in "What Goes Around..." Timberlake laments how his ex-lover has hurt him, "...Comes Around" discusses how karma has caught up with the former flame, because now her new boyfriend is treating her the same way she treated Timberlake in the first portion of the song.

The song has received generally positive reviews. Billboard magazine praised the single, suggesting it was superior to the two previous FutureSex/LoveSounds releases, "SexyBack" and "My Love". Billboard reviewer Chuck Taylor said: "To call this 'Cry Me a River, Pt. 2' is among the greatest compliments we can muster, given the disposable quality of the previous two releases." He also went on to predict that the song would continue Timberlake's string of hits: "Sounds like three in a row for Timberlake." About.com reviewer Bill Lamb stated that the song "is one of the most gorgeous pop melodies of the year."

With "What Goes Around...", Timberlake accomplished another chart feat: he became the first male artist since Usher in 2004 to have three or more consecutive number-one hits from one album.

Timberlake performed the song on the Grammy Awards in 2007.

Music video

The music video for the song has been described as a short film since the director's cut duration exceeds nine minutes and the beginning even features credits similar to a film. The video was directed by Samuel Bayer with dialogue written by Alpha Dog writer and director Nick Cassavetes. This is Timberlake's first video with explicit language. The video stars Timberlake as well as Scarlett Johansson and Alpha Dog co-star Shawn Hatosy. It also features the interlude ("...Comes Around") to the song.

It premiered on iTunes Store on February 9, 2007. This was the first time an artist ever premiered its video in the store. Before the official release online, trailers were released on Timberlake's official website as well as on many television outlets. The director's cut is only available online and a shorter edited version sent out to television channels. The video's official television premiere was during MTV's 2007 Grammy Awards pre-show on February 11, 2007. On iTunes Store, two versions are available for download; the clean version, as well as the explicit version. It currently holds the record for the fastest selling video on the iTunes Store, selling a record breaking 50,000 downloads.

The video starts off with Timberlake flirting with Scarlett Johansson on the rooftop of a 1950's Moulin Rouge circus-style club. She rejects with a tease at first but eventually leaves with him to go back to his place. They are shown in bed together then Johansson is shown jumping into his pool and floating underneath the surface as if drowning. Timberlake runs out and pulls her up as she laughs it off and starts to kiss him in the pool. Timberlake is then shown introducing her to a drunk Shawn Hatosy at the club calling her "The One".

Hatosy seems to be interested in Johansson which can be confirmed for sure when Timberlake catches the two making out in a stairway later on, despite Timberlake's wish for Hatosy to look out for her. After punching Hatosy and chasing after Johansson (who has sped off in her car), Timberlake then chases her in his Porsche Carrera GT until seeing her run right into a fiery car crash pile up in which she is thrown from the car and lands feet away from the crash. Timberlake notices a body lying prone on the ground. He gets out and kneels over her while the camera view moves toward the sky and ends the video. This video retired from TRL on May 7, 2007 after 40 days. This is Timberlake's 3rd video to retire from this countdown after "SexyBack" and "My Love".

In September 2007, the music video won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Direction.

"My Love" is the hit single co-written by Justin Timberlake, T.I., Nate Hills and Timbaland for Timberlake's second solo album FutureSex/LoveSounds (2006). It won the 2007 Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

Despite the huge commercial success and relatively recent release of the album's first single "SexyBack", radio stations in various cities across the U.S. began spinning the cut in mid-August 2006. In a similar fashion to "SexyBack", Timbaland contributes limited background vocals to the song, and the song also features a rap verse from T.I.. Reception of the song has been very positive, with many fans and critics preferring it over "SexyBack." The song received a rare 5/5 star rating from Pitchfork Media and was subsequently named their number one song of 2006. Timberlake performed "My Love" and "SexyBack" as a medley for the opening of the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, and again for the MTV Europe Music Awards 2006, which he also hosted. He also performed the song on Saturday Night Live.

Timberlake became the first male artist since Usher in 2004 to have two consecutive number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. The song became Timberlake's second number one single on the Hot 100, and T.I.'s first.

"My Love" is Timberlake's second top 10 single in a row in the Latin America Top 40.

Music video

The music video, directed by Paul Hunter, premiered on October 12. It includes the prelude to the song (Let Me Talk To You) which features the song's (and album) producer Timbaland. At the beginning it shows Timberlake in what seems to be a studio filled with white bars of light dancing with one of the many girls in the video. Then it goes on to show Timbaland and Timberlake rapping the prelude. Afterwards, the screen turns white and shows a distant Timberlake rotating coming towards the screen. He stops rotating once he is straight and starts singing the first verse. At random points in the video, the screen will change colors from black to white and show Timberlake with his dancers (the same ones who helped him out at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards), and different girls he seems to be singing the song to. While Timberlake is standing still in random parts of the video, the object he is talking about in the verse will start floating past him towards the screen. One example is when T.I. is rapping in front of a black screen, rubberbands start to float past him through the air towards the screen, which refers to his nickname as the "Rubberband Man" that he and his fans had given him. Other examples are the start of the first verse, Timberlake sings "If I wrote you a symphony", while having violins float past him toward the screen, and the start of the second verse, Timberlake sings "If I wrote you a love note", while sheets of paper and black pens float past him toward the screen.

There are three versions of the video. The first version released was the "Let Me Talk to You/My Love", which is 6:12. The second version is "My Love" album edit only. The last re-edit version is the "Let Me Talk to You/My Love" with a shortened interlude in the video.

It starts off with a cable car looking over a large city and then switches to a luxurious-looking hotel with Elena Anaya taking off her sweater. Then it cuts to Timberlake seemingly in a different room then to a club scene and Timberlake in front of a white background. The video alternates between those four viewpoints, with Timberlake and Anaya seeming to be spies in the hotel room and strangers in the club. At a certain point, Justin Timberlake goes over to Anaya's room by jumping over to her balcony. Then when Anaya goes to check it out, Justin traps her and they willingly have sex, proving that they might have had a sexual interest in each other. In the club, it ends with Justin cornering Elena in a bathroom stall. A sexual motion is shown. In the hotel room scene, Timberlake leaves by the same way that he entered and moments later jumps back to the balcony before an explosion ensues. It ends with the figure of Anaya sitting in a chair beside a small TV in which a kiss is frozen on the screen.

In September 2007, Furtado announced that she had recorded a single with Timberlake and new recording pop/rock artist Vince Perez but she was not sure if it will be released.

Timberlake cited that the song was supposedly will be on his album FutureSex/LoveSounds but it didn't make the cut, but the song will be released at the right time.

Vince Perez was asked how such an oppertunity revealed itself so early in his career and he said that Timberlake had listened to his demo he had submitted to Jive Records a while back and lady luck was on his side. Perez described the process as the most fun he has had in his life and his debut album The World Unknown would be released in mid 2008.

"Ayo Technology" was the fourth single from 50 Cent's newest album, Curtis. The song features Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. HipHopDX.com reported that 50 Cent had to re-work the song because of pressure from Universal Music Group (parent company of 50 Cent's record label, Interscope Records) due to the song being too explicit for airplay. It is about a man who is tired of using technology. The video for the song, which was originally going to be released on YouTube, was shelved as a result of this (although it was later released on August 2, 2007). HipHopDX also reported that the song was renamed three times. It was first titled "Ayo Pornography", then changed to "Ayo Technology", and then changed to "She Wants It". Finally, the song's title was once again changed to "Ayo Technology".

After the track was released to the Internet on July 5, 2007, many people thought that it had leaked, but instead, 50 Cent had actually released the song himself. Interscope requested all websites/bloggers, which featured the song, and any radio stations beginning to play the song, to remove it. Interscope's reason for their actions was that they wanted 50 Cent to focus on his previously released single, "I Get Money".

The music video was premiered by BET on August 2, 2007, and was filmed in London, UK.

50 Cent described the music video to MTV. He said:

“ You can see this is not more normal uniform, or get-up, when I'm in a music video. But it's time for me to do something a little different, and this is the perfect time for me to actually change my look. You might see this on the red carpet, but not in an actual music video. The biggest challenges for the video are giving off a natural vibe and not seeming contrived at any moment. For you to actually be comfortable when you're actually doing it is a task. History

"Give It to Me" features Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake, and Timbaland, each staking their claim within the music industry and taking a swipe at those who have attempted to bring them down and insult them in the past. Each of the three featured artists has a single verse in the song separated by the chorus which is sung by Nelly Furtado. A singular line in Furtado's verse is about Hip-Hop singer Fergie's appearance and commenting that she is not "promiscuous" in her 2006 single "Fergalicious". Nelly Furtado confirmed on Big Boy's Neighborhood (Power 106 FM) that a couple of lines are directed at Fergie and explained why she wrote those lines.

In an interview with MTV, Timbaland revealed the target of his verse to be producer Scott Storch, with whom he co-wrote Timberlake's 2002 single "Cry Me a River." Though production on the song is credited solely to Timbaland, Storch has claimed that he helped produce it and did not receive due credit.

Additionally, it is rumored Timberlake's verse is aimed at pop artist Prince. Prince reportedly started a feud during an Emmy after-party, claiming that "For whoever is claiming that they are bringing sexy back, sexy never left!" which caused Timberlake's response. The song was written by will.i.am, Taboo, apl.de.ap, Justin Timberlake (for technical reasons, Timberlake is not credited on the song), Ron Fair, P. Board, G. Pajon Jr, M.Fratantuno, and J.Curtis, and co-produced by will.i.am and Ron Fair. In this anti-war pacifist anthem, The Black Eyed Peas lament on various worldwide problems. Many issues are discussed, which include but are not limited to terrorism, U.S. government hypocrisy, racism, war, intolerance and greed. Disturbed by these problems, The Peas call on assistance from Timberlake who pleads (presumably to God), "Father, Father, Father help us, send some guidance from above...'cause people got me got me questioning...Where is the love?". The single is notable for being the first Black Eyed Peas single to feature Fergie. Early on, the Peas had been a trio, then before Fergie they had featured Kim Hill in two of their albums. Some view this song as an anthem against the 2003 invasion of Iraq since it was released shortly after the invasion began.

Although the song was one of the biggest worldwide hits of 2003, it almost did not happen. Following the commercial failures of their previous albums and singles, The Black Eyed Peas had become depressed and were about to quit the music industry. Although they had been praised critically and had a huge underground following, they had failed to garner a major pop or hip-hop following. One day, will.i.am ran into A&R executive Ron Fair whom Fair had recruited for a movie soundtrack. After realizing that The Peas were actually on a related label on their company's label, Fair offered to have them transferred to his part of the label to help with their career. Knowing that he might offend them as a corporate head with his ideas of a pop crossover, Fair asked will.i.am if the band might consider doing more poppish music.

As expected from Fair, Will.i.am was not pleased with the notion, and thought that the band might be considered as a "sell-out" if they did it. Fair stood strong on his ground, and reminded The Peas, that this could possibly be their last chance to succeed and as The Peas did want a second chance, they accepted. Fair then randomly suggested Justin Timberlake. To the surprise of Fair, The Peas did not resist and actually agreed, noting to Fair that Timberlake was a personal friend of theirs. Fair was surprised at the turn of events, but warned The Peas to be diligent in their recruitment of him: as musicians often engage in bureaucratic music industry politics, Fair advised The Peas to go to Timberlake directly to avoid drama with his label or management.

The Black Eyed Peas and will.i.am noted the advice and began writing a song that could be performed with Timberlake. Shortly after Christmas 2001, will.i.am created a loop and a guitar part that he liked. Repressing his emotions since September 11, will.i.am was able to get a few things off his chest as lyrics like, "Overseas we tryin' to stop terrorism, but we still got terrorists here livin', in the U.S.A., the big CIA, the Bloods and the Crips and the KKK...". Taboo and Apl.de.ap also heard the track and were able to write similar lyrics over it. Timberlake also got his chance to hear the track that will.i.am created. Impressed with the music, melodies immediately came racing to Timberlake along with the words "Where is the love?" Soon Timberlake had written the song's chorus and went to record it.

Although The Peas and Timberlake were happy with it, Fair still had issues with the song. He felt that the song's production was too rough and needed new post production. will.i.am was not pleased and tried to resist at first, but finally relented to Fair. Given clearance, Fair then went with his production asssistants and made numerous changes to the song: Timberlake's vocals were edited, Fergie (who had joined since the making of the song) had her vocals added, the song's famous string section was added, and verses were switched around. Following the additional production of Fair, will.i.am was still not pleased and was able to reach a compromise that blended the best of both versions. When the song is performed live, Fergie does Timberlake's parts.

Despite the song's rough path to production, it was rewarded with a nomination at the 2004 Grammys for Record of the Year.

Though the exact cause of death has not yet been determined, authorities investigating the remains of two dogs found buried at an Arizona home belonging to DMX said that one had serious bite wounds and another had signs of trauma to its abdomen. The Associated Press reports that investigators, looking into allegations of animal neglect, also found a third dog carcass, which had been burned so badly an exam was inconclusive. The remains were dug up on August 24 when investigators looking into the allegations raided the rapper's home and seized 12 pit bulls, a number of weapons and a quarter-ounce of marijuana. Radiohead have spent much of the past year updating fans on the progress of their seventh album via a series of mysterious, sometimes incomprehensible blog posts. So now that they've finished the record, why should anything be different? Over the weekend, the band posted a series of bizarre hieroglyphics on its blog, featuring a sorta-smiley-faced character some fans recognized from a Radiohead T-shirt. (The shirt in question has a hand-drawn figure with stick arms and a frown, and the phrase "Hello My Name Is Worm Buffet.") Fans then got to work creating a Rosetta stone to decode the so-called "Worm Buffet" glyphs, and by Monday morning, they had succeeded. Richie Ramone was only in the Ramones for four years, but he figures the songs he wrote during his tenure are worth a million bucks. Richie (born Richard Reinhardt) filed a federal lawsuit on Friday, claiming he's owed almost $1 million in royalties for a handful of songs he wrote while in the group from 1983-'87, according to AP. Reinhardt's suit names Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Apple Inc., RealNetworks Inc., the Ramones' management and the estate of late lead guitarist Johnny Ramone, claiming that he never fully signed over the rights to digitally sell six songs he wrote for the group, including "Smash You," "Somebody Put Something in My Drink" and "I'm Not Jesus." As if buying tickets to your favorite concerts weren't expensive enough, now it appears some fans are resorting to buying pass codes to fan clubs so they can get in on presale ticket opportunities offered to fan club members, according to the Wall Street Journal. The practice, which includes fan-club members selling the pass codes on eBay and Craigslist for anything from $4 to $20, has angered the people who run the fan clubs, who say it undercuts their attempts to make sure fans have first dibs on tickets.

Two early teen romances, first to a school sweetheart and then to aspiring pop singer Veronica Finn predated intense media interest, but both ended unhappily. Timberlake then entered a high-profile celebrity relationship with fellow pop singer Britney Spears, with whom he had worked on the New Mickey Mouse Club. This ended abruptly in March 2002, amidst allegations of Spears' infidelity with choreographer Wade Robson, a mutual friend of Spears and Timberlake. Lynn Harless says as a mother she too was devastated regarding the break-up, but to this day speaks warmly of Spears, "Britney grew up on my living room floor. I still love her to death. Timberlake had a cameo in the video for Nelly Furtado and Timbaland's single "Promiscuous". He released his second solo album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, on September 12, 2006. The album, which Timberlake created in 2005,[12] debuted in the number one position on the Billboard chart, selling 684,000 copies its first week. It is the biggest album for pre-orders on iTunes, and beat Coldplay's record for the biggest one-week sales of a digital album. The album was produced by Timbaland and Danja (who produced a bulk of the album), will.i.am, Rick Rubin and Timberlake himself,[13] and features guest vocals by Three 6 Mafia, T.I. and will.i.am. A studio representative described it as being "all about sexiness" and aiming for "an adult feel".[11]

The album's lead single, "SexyBack", was performed by Timberlake at the opening of the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, where it remained for seven consecutive weeks.[14] "My Love", the album's second single, also produced by Timbaland and featuring rapper T.I., reached number one on the Hot 100, as did third single "What Goes Around.../...Comes Around Interlude". After the Super Bowl controversy, Timberlake put his recording career on hold in an attempt to jumpstart his acting career. Timberlake had a few minor acting roles during his early music career, including a bit part as a model in the 2000 made-for-television film Model Behavior, and a cameo in the 2001 film On the Line, but was seeking more substantial roles. The first role he took during this time was as a journalist in the thriller Edison Force, which was filmed in 2004 and received a direct-to-video release on July 18, 2006. He also appeared in the films Alpha Dog, Black Snake Moan, Richard Kelly's Southland Tales, and voiced a young King Arthur in the animated film Shrek the Third, released on May 18, 2007. He also appeared as a young Elton John, in the video for John's song "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore".

He continued to record with other artists. After "Where Is the Love?", he again collaborated with the Black Eyed Peas on the 2005 track "My Style" from their album Monkey Business. Additionally, Timberlake was featured on Nelly's song, "Work It", which was remixed and included on Nelly's 2003 remix album. When recording the 2005 single "Signs" with Snoop Dogg, Timberlake discovered a throat condition. Nodules were subsequently removed from his throat[11] in an operation that took place on May 5, 2005. He was advised not to sing or speak loudly for at least a few months. In the summer of 2005, Timberlake started his own record company, JayTee Records.

2002–2004: Justified and Super Bowl

In August 2002, after months of recording the album, Timberlake performed at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, where he premiered his first single, "Like I Love You", a sparse dance track produced by The Neptunes. The song reached number eleven on the Billboard Hot 100. Following the single, Timberlake released his debut solo album, Justified, on November 5, 2002. The album was also a success, despite selling considerably less than previous 'N Sync efforts. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 album chart, selling 439,000 copies in its first week of release. It eventually went on to sell over three million copies in the U.S. and over seven million copies worldwide.[7] The album contained several tracks which were created to be part of Michael Jackson's Invincible album but did not make it to the final selection of songs used for it [citation needed]. The album also received critical acclaim, thanks to its heavy R&B influence provided by hip-hop producers The Neptunes and Timbaland. It spun off hits throughout late 2002 and 2003, including the top ten singles "Cry Me a River" and "Rock Your Body".

Timberlake supported the album by co-headlining the Justified/Stripped Tour with Christina Aguilera in the summer of 2003. For many dates, The Black Eyed Peas served as the opening act; Timberlake appeared uncredited on their smash hit "Where Is the Love?" which was also released in the summer of 2003. His record company did not want Timberlake to be credited for fear that it would take focus away from his solo releases; still, Timberlake often appeared with The Black Eyed Peas to perform the track live, including during the 2003 MTV Europe Music Awards. By the end of the year, Timberlake recorded a song entitled "I'm Lovin' It". It was used by McDonald's as the theme to their "I'm Lovin' It" campaign. The deal with McDonald's earned Timberlake an estimated $6 million.[8]

In February 2004, during the halftime show of the Super Bowl XXXVIII, Timberlake performed with Janet Jackson before a television audience of over 140 million viewers. At the end of the performance, Timberlake tore off a part of Jackson's black leather costume in a "costume reveal" meant to accompany a portion of the song lyrics, "gonna have you naked by the end of this song". Part of the costume became detached, and Jackson's breast was briefly exposed. Timberlake apologized for the incident saying that he was "sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance of the Super Bowl... It was not intentional and is regrettable".[9] The phrase "wardrobe malfunction" has since been used by the media to refer to the incident and has entered pop culture.

As a result of the controversy, Timberlake and Jackson were banned from the 2004 Grammy Awards unless they agreed to apologize on screen at the event. Jackson, who already gave a public apology, declined to issue a second one. Timberlake attended and issued a scripted apology when accepting the first of two Grammy Awards he received that night (Best Pop Vocal Album for Justified and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Cry Me a River"), causing some from the black entertainment community to label him a "punk" and"sell out" and call for his "Black Pass" to be revoked.[10] He had also been nominated for Album of the Year for Justified, Record of the Year for "Cry Me a River", and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "Where Is the Love?" with The Black Eyed Peas.

Timberlake was a member of the popular 1990s boy band, 'N Sync, and was considered a teen idol. Timberlake grew up in Millington, a small town just north of Memphis. His first attempts at a singing career saw him singing country music songs on Star Search as "Justin Randall". In 1993, he got a real taste of fame when he joined the ranks of The Mickey Mouse Club. There he met future girlfriend and pop superstar Britney Spears, future tourmate Christina Aguilera, and future bandmate JC Chasez. When the show ended in 1995, Timberlake recruited Chasez to be in a new all-male singing group Lou Pearlman (an Orlando swindler, now indicted on criminal charges of investment fraud) was forming with Chris Kirkpatrick. The group would come to be known as *NSYNC. In 1999 Justin acted as Jason Sharpe in the made-for-TV movie Model Behavior.
